BEING (IN) SCULPTURE RUTE ROSAS

PROJECT "40 YEARS, 40 ARTISTS"

XX Bienal Internacional de Arte de Cerveira

Rute Rosas (n.1972) combines its activity Plastic Artist - Sculptor with the Assistant Professor (Ph.D) Department of Fine Arts - Sculpture, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Porto (FBAUP), an institution which takes several positions in management bodies, also being integrated member of I2ADS (Art Research Institute, Design and Society). It is in the scope of functions that accumulates that since 2013, is the representative of FBAUP the Scientific Council of the Cerveira Biennial Art Foundation (FBAC). Since 1996 holds exhibitions and has designed, participated, collaborated and organized numerous events, group exhibitions and workshopsin several countries. His works have been reported in numerous publications. He received numerous awards and his work is represented in various institutions and private collections in Portugal, Spain, Italy, England and Brazil.

However, the relationship of the artist with the Village of Arts has already more than two decades and takes us to 1997, the year in which they were integrated into the (now) Collection FBAC works Birthe, Pife, Fabio, Matheo (120x130x60cm) and Anke Dirck, Clara (100x120x120cm). These objects (produced integrating iron, plaster, wax, photography and glass) reflect the plurality of media, techniques and materials that make the Rute Rosas relationship with the sculpture as a discipline that combines ARETE , TECHNE and PHRONESIS the Greek philosopher's thought Socrates , the importance of a practical structure of poetry ( PHRONESIS) While net between what is intimate, private and public and in the balance between knowing how to think ( arete ) and know - how ( TECHNE ). These two 1997 sculptures, presented under the IX International Biennial of Cerveira Art, held between 9 and 31 August 1997, were undertaken in an artist residency at Anchor Beach Village with German artists (hence the name of the pieces in honor of each participant).

An artistic trend is a desire to be otherwise. If vital, penetrates all, can influence the ideas and customs through everything. Originally, I do not think that changing tastes and trends of fashions, even the dressing, are arbitrary, before responding to this new desire to be. [1]

Rute Rosas is an artist anti trends and their artistic production, it may be argued, is an exercise in catharsis and combat self-censorship, not favoring the matter as a starting point, but diversifying employment opportunities that combine processes intense and immersive manualidade eat use of the new medium. And it is in this context that we find in his work textiles, glass, photography, video, casting, metals, woods, in expressions ranging from sculpture object to performance, through installation and jewelery. In his work is the body element. It is the center of a neo narrative, not diachronic and unlike defined by Aristotle, in which the artist exposes and is exposed, creating full works of affectivity, memory and forgetting. As he wrote Miguel Pérez Von Hafe under a solo exhibition of 2005:

This self-referential dimension functions more as a starting point by which the artist relates to its surroundings, than as a question of their social, political or aesthetic. Ie the representation of the regime establishes more direct relationship with the spectator scale than clarifies any biographical narrative. So, what we have shown in the last projects of this artist is a concern in the process where they develop to the detriment of the conventional structure of presentation / receipt of tenders.

It is in this context that, also in 2005, the artist presents From earth to heaven (photo and fabric, 250x160cm) to the XIII International Biennial of Cerveira Art, held between August 20 and September 17, and wins the Revelation Prize. The solo exhibition breathes , organized in 2008 at the Cultural Forum of Cerveira, the artist donated I make account that thou ... (the end of a chapter) , consisting of a mattress sawed in half, symbolizing the end of a personal episode (190x60x60cm) . However, and quoting the words of the artist:

The art object is, in my opinion, the result of living experience but the art is not life. Comes from life. The artistic objects produce a connecting action and artists are experts imagination, creativity and attentive curiosity.

In 2017, under the nineteenth BIAC, the artist donated to the collection of FBAC ... silence and only (winter) , using textiles, glass and mirrors (300x170x170cm), the result of work experience in glass developed in recent years in Marinha Grande. His work and his presence are already a trademark of the oldest biennial of the Iberian Peninsula, as evidenced in the collection and the different projects that helps streamline with students FBAUP and that's why, in the celebration of these 40 years, we could not help of the reference.
